What People Are Asking

If you want to submit a question, submit it by CLICKING HERE

📍 Q1: Am I too old to use a walking cane? And if not, how do I go about inquiring about it?
A: You’re never too old for a white cane. I keep telling people in the group, get one, it will liberate you. No matter your age, people will want to help, people will understand better, and you’ll receive more help and freedom all at once. In regards to inquiring about one, here’s a very cheap one on AMAZON

📍 Q2: I walk to work, how do I ensure I stay safe?
A: Great question! Your hearing is most likely heightened as your eyesight has failed you, so avoid wearing headphones. You’ll be surprised how much you can hear. I cross the street in my neighborhood solely on hearing if cars are coming. If you have a coworker that lives close, just ask them to walk with you. They’ll be happy to help, just be honest about the situation. Also, using the Be My Eyes on the Meta AI Glasses would be ideal! Basically a volunteer watches through cameras on the glasses Live, and then they help you navigate the world, it’s amazing technology!

Tip Of The Week

😊A Positive Mindset: Easier Said Than Done

Before you roll your eyes, I want to share something from our Help The Eyes Facebook Group

I asked Julie in the group, what level of sight she had since her and I have the same condition (RP). Here response was simple yet profound:

“It’s not real good. Still have tiny bits of vision and am super thankful for everything that I still do see. Life is a journey and I'm not going to miss a thing!”

This hit me like a train.

How many days do us visually impaired folk constantly feel bad for ourselves that we miss out on opportunities around us?

How often do we sulk in our own sadness rather than trying new things, getting out more, meeting new people, traveling, all because we’re scared or we feel bad for ourselves?

I’m guilt of this almost every day.

I’m no therapist or some advice guru, but if we focus on the fact that life is hard for everyone, everyone is going through something, we can be a whole lot happier every day.

So the next time you want to feel bad for yourself or sad you can’t drive anymore, or watch your children play outside, get out there and embarrass yourself and play tag with them, trip over things and laugh at yourself.

This is the most difficult tip to implement that I will ever give, but it will be the longest lasting and the most effective.

It’s impossible to be positive and optimistic all day everyday, but try to be positive 10% more, and your life will change for the better.

We Got This.

The Personal Touch

Laugh at yourself, it’s okay!’

This last weekend my family and I went to some garage sales.

I haven’t been to a garage sale in years, and I didn’t realize that it was something I wasn’t going to be able to do with my vision. However, a clutter of stuff on a driveway is a nightmare for the visually impaired, as you all know.

So what happens? I trip over a giant table that has a bunch of stuff on it and I topple over it and stuff goes everywhere. Now it helped that I was in public, so I couldn’t get too upset and throw stuff and be angry.

Instead, my wife and I laughed about it and so did others around. We apologized and fixed the setup and went on our way. The peple were super nice and understanding and we had a good chat!

We may be scared to put ourselves in certain situations, which is understandable as sometimes it can be a safety concern. But certain thngs, we just need to get out and try them, and if something happens, laugh, it’s okay!

So be yourself, laugh at yourself, and enjoy life!

We got this!
